A message to our users, both silent and vocal, questioning why we decided to go private, and wondering whether or not it was the right move:We are completely aware that this sub is not where people are going for information/to show support for the Black community. By going private, we were telling people that instead of creating and posting memes for a day, they can use their time and energy to do something more productive donate money and show support for the Black community. It was also a display of solidarity for George Floyd and his family.People said it was disruptive, but that’s just it. The point was to try and disrupt people's normal day. A lot of privileged people don’t even have to bat an eye at the protest, so if we can force them to notice by temporarily taking down a meme sub, then that’s great.And don’t get us wrong, posting memes in solidarity would have been great to, and we encourage it now, but that would be missing the point of yesterday’s event.
